Monday Musings - 4/17/17

Another epic weekend of battles! I had to be home this weekend to take care of a family member so that meant I had lots of time to battle. It was a x2 Crew Experience weekend, which meant that every battle where you finished in the top 10 of your team in XP you'd get double crew experience. Since a priority for me in the game is getting my crews trained up I was very mindful of that. A few thoughts/highlights.

Gentlemen, Start Your Missions!

Did you know that you can get a lot of nice bonuses just for achieving things in the game you're probably doing anyhow - like fire at least 6 shots that damage enemy vehicles? You can, by completing those tasks. However...(and I didn't realize this until this weekend) you have to actually do something to start the missions. Click start.

To find the missions (and start them) click the Missions button at the top left of the garage screen.

There are different missions for each tank type (Light, Medium, Tank Destroyer,

When the Missions and Specials dialog box opens, click one of the tank type missions at the bottom (it doesn't matter which one, you'll get a long lost that lets you scroll through all of them).

Once you're on that list you can click any missions for any of the tank types to see what it's conditions and rewards are.

For example: the HT-3 mission (Heavy tank, 3rd mission) requires you to destroy at least 2 enemy vehicles of 2 different types. If you can do that you'll get a 50,000 silver credit bonus.

There is a secondary condition of causing at least,1,000 HP of damage. If you do that also you'll get an extra 25,000 silver credits as well. Complete both the primary AND secondary conditions and you'll have completed the mission "with honors".

The missions have to be done in order - in other words you can't get credit for completing mission 8 before you've completed missions 1-7. That's a bummer because I've completed the first 14 LT missions and I've twice met the requirements for LT-15...but since I hadn't done all 14 of the previous LT missions yet I didn't get credit for it.

But here's the catch I learned this weekend...I had assumed that just meeting the criteria you'd automatically get the credit but actually there's ONE MORE thing you have to do to start earning mission credit. Click start.

At the bottom of the first mission's screen for EACH TANK TYPE you'll see a button that says "Start". You have to click that for EACH TANK TYPE in order to start the missions running. Once you've started mission 1, the rest of them will just automatically activate as you complete the prior mission...but for mission 1 you have you click Start.

I had only clicked start on the LT one (and I don't recall doing that, actually). Which means that for the last 4,000 battles I hadn't been earning ANY mission credits for mediums, heavies, arty....That explains why I'm nearly done with all 15 LT missions but am only on Mission 2 or 3 for my other tank types.

Go start those missions right away (remember to click Start for each tank type) then just play random battles as you normally do. You'll start piling up the bonuses.

The Curse of YouTube

As I've mentioned here before I watch a lot of YouTube videos on how to play the game, picking up tips and ideas. Unfortunately...I'm not the only one. One of the best places to scout on the Highway map, for example, is the center of the map near the small water tower. Unfortunately now EVERYBODY knows that and when I get to that spot to set up most of the time one or both of the enemy scouts arrives in the same spot. What was briefly a perfect, quiet, hiding spot for passive scouting to light up the enemy has now turned into a small brawl. Instead of just tossing on the camo net and raking in the spotting damage...you barely get into your bush before you have to start fighting enemy scouts (and that means you're lit and suddenly arty and TDs are shooting at you too).

So word of warning...I definitely still recommend watching the YouTube videos to learn where to go...just bear in mind that the other team is probably watching them too...so you may well have company. If it's on YouTube...it's not a secret.

Which brings me to....

Two's a Crowd

Especially in my light tanks I always let my team know during the countdown where I plan to head to at the beginning. That does two things:
  1.  It lets my arty and TDs get a sense for where they might want to set up for shots. If they know where I'm scouting they have a better idea where the enemies might be lit.
  2. It lets any other scouts on my team know where I'm going so they can plan accordingly.
I can't tell you how many times I've said "I'm going to try to get spots from F4 to start with" and when the battle starts I drive straight to F4...only to discover I'm being tailgated by another LT on my team the whole way. I pull up at my spot...and the other LT is right next to me.

O.K., I get it, you saw the same video I did. But does it occur to you that having TWO scouts side by side is a total waste? You should be lighting a different part of the map. When I notice this I'll often just roll my eyes and head off to a different spot myself, rather than try to educate the other LT driver. But the other day, on Sand River, I got to my spot and our LTTB pulled in right behind me. I said on chat "It's sort of silly for us to BOTH be here. :)" to which he responded "Where else would we go?"

Ugh. How did you get all the way to LTTB without learning where else on the map you could go? I pulled out and surfed the ridges...and I noticed he was dead 90 seconds later.

Lesson: Communicate with your team. Working together as a heavy might mean working side by side. Working together as a light means making sure as much of the map as possible is lit for your teammates and that means not sitting right next to other scouts on your team.

This weekend I...

  • Got my first "Brothers-in-Arms" medal. Have to admit, it was a bit cheeky. I was in my AMX ELC having a very good game both spotting and dealing opportunistic damage. One of the TDs on my team was also having a very good game sniping. Late he noticed that we each had 3 or 4 kills and he sent me a platoon invite. O.K., I'll accept. I probably should platoon more often anyhow.
  • Had not one but TWO 4,000+ spotting damage games. One of them was on Redshire and the other was on El Halluf, which is rapidly becoming one of my favorite spotting maps. I'm routinely getting more than 1K spotting damage (at least on the decent maps) but 4K is still pretty cool when that happens.
  • I achieved LT-13, the 13th light tank mission, SOLO, with honors. That mission requires you to get at least 1,500 spotting AND deal 1,000 direct damage. You can do those in a platoon, and your platoon-mate's spotting and damage counts towards the mission. I did it on my own.
Good luck and have fun!
