Loot boxes are here and I bought 300 of them. I'm keeping track of the rewards from the boxes and on this post I'll share what I'm getting (with the averages) in case you're wondering what you might get.
Updated: Dec 17, 2020
IMPORTANT: Your mileage may vary. I'm just sharing averages and there are some important data caveats I'll call out as I go.
Highlights
I got all the tanks I wanted almost right off the bat. The 8th box I opened had a GSOR 1008 in it. The 17th box had a Bisonte C45. The 36th box had a ISU-152K. The 64th box had an M4A1 FL10. Again, this might not be your experience, but it's what happened for me.
The premium tanks from the boxes do not come with crews.
It took me about 40 boxes to get enough decorations to reach Festive Level X.
Comparing 2020 to 2019
Notes:
- Forgive the rough table, Blogger doesn't give me much to work with here.
- The Gold, Silver, and Prem Time numbers are how much I'm averaging (mean) per box.
- The Tanks and Garage slot numbers are approximately how many boxes it takes me to get one.
Thing | 2020 | 2019 |
---|---|---|
Boxes opened | 300 | 300 |
Gold | 507 | 677 |
Silver | 59333 | 58667 |
Premium Time | .67 Days | .72 Days |
Tanks | 1 every 12 boxes | 1 every 7.7 boxes |
Garage Slots | 1 every 15 boxes | 1 every 9.1 boxes |
Notes:
- The Gold average is highly dependent on getting duplicate tanks. I now have all of the tanks available so every time I get a tank in a box I'll get the gold equivalent. I got 9K gold in one box, for example, because I already had the Bourrasque
- Likewise I get a free Garage slot for every tank I get from now on.
- I got a few of the 3D skins too, but I don't track those so I'm not sure which or how many. 3 or 4 I'd guess.
Observations
Dec 10: This is day two and I opened 20 more boxes (10 New Years and 10 Magic). As expected the Gold and Garage Slots numbers are improving as I start to get duplicate tanks. Interestingly the Silver, Premium Time, and Tanks numbers are improving as well.
One frequently asked question is "Which kind of boxes (Magic, Lunar, etc) are best?" The answer is...they're all the same except for the flavor of decorations. I've gotten either 2 or 3 tanks out of each flavor. I've gotten a bit more Gold from Christmas so far (Mostly because I got a dupe Bourrasque), but I expect that to even out as I go.
Dec 11: Regression to the mean continues in most areas. I got four tanks (all low tier) in the first 9 boxes today (then none for the last 11). Gold average up slightly. Last year I got a total of 7 of the tier 8 tanks - will need to start hitting more tier 8s for the gold to significantly climb. That said, I've gotten 4 tier 8s in 120 boxes so far, so I'm on pace to exceed last year in that regard.
I might end up with fewer new garage slots this year because the tanks seem slightly more evenly distributed. Last year I got 10 of the AM 39, and 7 of the Sexton and Bret Panther, but zero of the Progetto and SU-130 (I already owned them anyhow). This year, except for the Pz T15, I'm getting 1 and 2, no zeros.
Prem time slipped back a bit too. Last year I got 215 days, so far this year just 61. I have plenty of it, so would gladly accept less prem time for more gold or credits this year but...
Dec 12: The last 20 boxes were a bit of a disappointment. Most of the averages declined - mostly because the last 20 (In fact last 31) boxes included just 1 vehicle: An M22 Locust. In fact it's been 88 boxes since our last Tier 8 tank and that's kind of "tanking" the gold averages. Likewise our garage slots have sort of dried up. I don't expect this to persist but for right now it's holding the numbers down.
The silver credits take in the last 20 boxes were a little low too, but that's unrelated to the vehicles. Interestingly, the prem time average improved a little.
Dec 13: Today was more of the same. 20 boxes opened, only one vehicle (another M22) so the gold, tanks, and garage slots numbers all declined a bit. Silver declined too. Prem time improved slightly. Still a good value overall, but these last 54 boxes have been bad if tanks are what you're after - just three M22s in the whole batch. It's now been 108 boxes since our last tier VIII.
Dec 14: Curiouser and curiouser. Twenty more boxes opened today, and just a single tank (Matilda BP). Gold, tanks, and garage slots all continue to languish. 128 boxes since our last tier VIII. Silver and prem time were a bit more plentiful today...but hardly any tanks.
Dec 15: Now it's starting to get a bit worrying. Today's 20 boxes...not a single vehicle. And the Silver count was quite low too. It's now 148 boxes since our last tier VIII. Premium time is getting close to last year, but everything else is down.
Dec 16: I got impatient and decided to just go ahead and open the rest. Started to get some tanks again, including a couple of tier 8s, which improve things a bit. Still, at the end I'm going to be well short of last year's gold total I think - simply because I'm getting significantly fewer tanks.
Dec 17: OK, opened the final set. Had a little surge of tanks (including a couple of Tier 8s towards the end but still only got 66% as many (26 vs 39) as last year overall. Exactly as many Tier 8s though (7), which is interesting.
How are the tanks?
I took the GSOR 1008 and Bisonte C45 out for one battle each. I'll do more thorough reviews down the road, but my first impressions (based on only one battle, that's important) are:
- GSOR 1008 is kinda slow. You'll have a hard time reaching that 60km/h speed. The gun is fantastic. The reload time between shells is great, but between clips it's pretty long. Accuracy and standard pen were fine, standard shell velocity was also pretty good.
- Bisonte C45 the armor was pretty good; I bounced a lot more shots than I expected. Gun was ok. I'll need to practice a bit more with this one, and I didn't play especially well so I probably only fired 8 or 10 shots. I'm hampered a bit because I don't have an experienced Italian Heavy crew (nobody does!) so I'm still training that up.
