As you start to progress in the game, and especially as you move into the Tier IV-VI tanks, I recommend that you spend a little time watching some of the YouTube videos that are out there. In this post I'm going to highlight three WOT YouTubers that I have found very helpful.
Videos for World of Tanks fall into a few broad categories, including:
Videos for World of Tanks fall into a few broad categories, including:
- Map Tactics - These videos are guided tours of the various maps with the presenter talking about their recommended strategy for that map. This can be handy if you're bewildered about how to approach a particular battle map. Often the presenters will highlight different tactics for different kind of maps and usually they'll show some actual gameplay on that map.
- Tank Reviews - Here the presenter talks about the strengths and weaknesses of a particular tank and, usually, shows it in action. Can be handy if you're wondering if you should get a particular tank or if you've got one and are looking for tips and tricks to use it better.
- Game Replay - Not necessarily tied to particular tank or map, just a notable game that the presenter wants to talk about.
Claus Shoots Them Up the [BEEP]!
One of the best known is Claus Kellerman. I'm not really sure what his background is but he has dozens of excellent videos that fit into the categories above - and a few that don't. Claus is entertaining and knowledgeable but he's also got a lot of NSFW language, so you might want to make sure your headphones are on.
His map tactics videos are especially useful.
The Curiously Moniker-ed "QuickyBaby"
I'm guessing that his nickname stems somehow from his nimbleness on the keyboard, but it might be best not to think too much about it. Quicky is a Brit who has a large selection of WOT videos. In addition to his map tactics and tank reviews I highly recommend his videos on configuring your WOT settings and training your crew. He's got a lot of deep knowledge of the nuts and bolts of the game and you can quickly pick up some tips that will elevate your own game.
Just following his tips to customize my battle view and reticle have made a huge difference for me.
Class is in session with Professor Zeven
He doesn't refer to himself that way, but everytime I watch one of his videos I feel like I'm going to school (in a good way). Zeven does quite long videos - often over an hour - and gives you a LOT of insight into the thought-process of the best players. He'll show several different battle replays and really talk you through what's going on. It's like having a great coach right there in your YouTube window.
Which to Watch?
I watch all three of them, personally. If I'm looking for more entertainment I'll watch Claus. Even my wife, who doesn't play World of Tanks, enjoys watching Claus over my shoulder sometimes. If I have the time and brainpower to really sit down for a masterclass in WOT tactics I'll watch Zeven (and even take notes on occasion). QuickyBaby is good for when I only have 10-20 minutes and want to see what he's been up to, or if I'm looking for a deep dive into the garage, barracks or settings.
One thing to keep in mind is that all of these players are usually in Tier VIII or higher tanks - and of course they're extremely good players - so don't think you're going to click over, jump into your M5 and do what they do. But you can still learn a lot about tactics, teamwork and how to gauge the flow of the battle from watching what they do.
The other thing to be prepared for is that when you start watching and learning from these guys you may initially do a bit WORSE. Don't get discouraged - it's probably because watching what they do (especially their map tactics) will encourage you to try some new things. It's easy to play it safe, sit back and camp (and not help your team much). But once you've really started to absorb these map tactics you'll be driving into the battle and, at least initially, you'll be a bit like a baby elephant. So don't get discouraged if you get killed faster the first few times - it's just growing pains and as you get better and more comfortable you'll improve fast, score better and win more often.
Go be epic and have some fun.
