Are the Polish TDs good? Well...

So World of Tanks recently added tank destroyers to the Polish tech tree. Are they good? Are they bad? Here's an early take.

(Note: I've been playing the Kilana, but haven't unlocked the Tier 9/10 yet so keep that in mind)

At first glance the tanks are interesting. Decent armor, big alpha guns, more accurate than you might expect. But...

They're listed as "Assault TDs" but the armor isn't quite good enough (especially if you're facing same tier or better). In a battle this morning in the Tier 8 Kilana, I was getting easily penned frontally by a STRV S1 and a Guard both just shooting AP. Then a British LT was penning me with gold without bigger worries.

Normally I'd try to angle a bit more, but the gun traverse is VERY small - only 5 degrees left or right - which makes it hard to fight AND angle at the same time. Aim time is a bit slow so from mid-long distance you don't want to have to turn too much.

So what to do?

I think the right way to play them is going to turn out to push forward a bit aggressively, angle more, and just fire more barely-aimed shots from close up where you don't have to aim quite so much.

That means having a crew trained for repairs if you can, so you can't be so easily tracked.

Another reason...

There's another reason to get in close - the alpha is range-dependent. You get more damage per shot close up than you do if you're sniping from the back.

Also the Polish TDs have terrible view range, so if you need another reason not to park in the back, you're basically blind so you're going to get outspotted anyhow. Might as well push up where you can see them too.

So are they good?

I think I'm going to say that they're good, but they're really hard to play well.
