Monday May 28 in World of Tanks

A few musings for you on this fine Monday the 28th.

The 40TP Habicha

Thanks to the May Scavenger Hunt I finished the grind through the 40TP Habicha today, and thank goodness. What an awful tank that is. I'm sure I'll eventually get around to doing a full tank review of it but for now let's just say that it's the Tier 6 Polish medium. It's sluggish, the top gun is has nice alpha but struggles to hit anything beyond point-blank range, the armor is useless, the view range is underwhelming, DPM is underwhelming....

The whole tank is just a yawn that you can't wait to get done with.

Radios

The radio mechanic in World of Tanks is one of those things people don't pay much attention to. And there's a good reason...it often doesn't matter. Especially at higher tiers.

What happens when you don't have sufficient signal range is that friendly tanks outside your range aren't visible to you on the minimap. And anything they spot doesn't appear for you either - they basically cease to exist to you, for that period of time that they're out of range. So if you've ever had the experience where you look at your minimap and one or more friendly tanks are nowhere to be seen (even though they're still alive)...that's why. They're out of radio range.

However...on most maps, for most tanks, in most battles...that doesn't matter that much. You can only render tanks out to 564m. If your radio range is only 395m and a teammate is 500m away from you and spots somebody 200m further than that...it would be a miraculous blind shot for you to hit them anyhow.

Also keep in mind that most maps in WOT are 1000m (or smaller) so unless you're on the red line your radio range is going to cover a pretty large bit of the map anyhow.

Radio does matter occasionally. But not very often. The tanks it's most likely to matter to are scouts and snipers. If you have one of those tanks, then the radio is a little more important for you. Even then it's probably the least important piece of gear on the tank. I always upgrade it last.

The one exception MIGHT be if the upgraded radio is actually lighter than the stock one...then I might be more interested in upgrading to save weight and improve performance. To be honest though, I still upgrade it last, it's just a bit more beneficial to get it.

Note: This also extends to the Radio Operator's Signal Boosting and Relaying skills. Those are about the 6th or 7th most important skills to get in most cases, in my opinion.

Got a good example of the radio range making a difference in battle? Leave it in the comments down below!

Best Premium Tank?

Got this question today: "I'm a new player, what is the best premium tank for me to spend my hard-earned money on?"

If you read my post about what tech tree line you should grind up then you probably already know what my answer was: The tank you enjoy playing.

The Defender/Object 252U is a great tank...if you like slow, brawling, heavies.

The Skorpion G is a terrific tank...but if you don't like snipers, you won't enjoy it much.

LT-432 is possibly the best light tank in the game, especially tier for tier. But you'd rather sidescrape than scout then you probably won't have much fun in it.

So which premium should you buy? The one you like to play. What's your playstyle?

Apricots vs. Lemons on any given Sunday

If you needed more evidence that XVM isn't the deciding factor in wins/losses....this morning I had a battle where my team had 5 yellow players, 1 green, and only 2 reds. The other team was ENTIRELY orange/red.  We got beat.

Wasn't even a particularly good game. We lost 9-15 on Empire's Border and most of our team, including the lemons, did very little. Our green player in the STRV S1 got 3 or 4 kills, I think, but otherwise...it was a standard loss to a team that XVM would have predicted we'd trounce.

If you run XVM (and I do) don't get too hung up on the WN8 colors. They're handy to know...but at the end of the day it's about who takes the best positions, makes the best decisions, and hits their shots. Apricots and Tomatoes can beat Lemons and Limes.

GLHF!
