Don't Be That Guy: Team Edition

Today's "Don't Be That Guy" is actually multiple guys.

I was in my Leo on El Halluf yesterday. It was a Tier 8 battle and each team had a single scout; ours was a Tier 6 (T37 maybe?). From the countdown I took my Leo to C2 (my usual in a MT on El Halluf) and as I'm driving there, so was our T37. Though the way he was driving, he seemed uncertain where to go.

Usually when I see LT drivers go to the C2 area they go fast hoping to get there first and get first shot advantage. Personally I don't think that's an especially good play for LTs (especially bottom tier) because you just end up brawling with tanks that have better armor and better alpha than you but hey...it's a choice.

T37 though, was meandering. For a moment looked like he wanted to go to A1, then he changed his mind and followed us up to C2. Soon the enemy arrived and the shooting started. We were doing pretty well in that corner, at one point up 5-2 and with a good advantage on hit points. Then I noticed that T37 was still kind of fapping about in the B4/C3 area. I also noticed that the griping had begun. The TDs and arty were all yelling at the T37 in chat because he wasn't scouting.

We won the NW corner and started to push down the 1/2 line towards their base. I flanked around at H4, got in some good damage, but eventually got killed, and our 1/2 line push also stalled out. Their MTs that had gone to the south had killed most of our TDs and next thing I know our 4 tank lead was wiped out and the score was 13-13. Our two remaining tanks were an arty...and our T37 friend. Who had spent the last couple of minutes at D4, obviously not sure what to do.

Now the griping had turned into full-scale raging. Dead TDs in chat calling the T37 names, one even posted that he'd reported the T37 as a bot. T37 wasn't responding. Was the T37 a bot? Maybe.

A minute later we'd lost - enemy capped out.

Checking the end plates I saw that, unsurprisingly, our T37 friend had a pretty bad game. He did 1, maybe 2, shots of damage, and not much else. Then I decided to check his stats...he was a 43% player (not surprising) but also...he only had about 2100 battles. He was a noob.

Judging by the in-battle chat I'm sure he got quite a few angry direct messages after the game, all of them from people who didn't bother to check his stats, I'm guessing.

I sent him a message too. My message read: "Hey, after that El Halluf game you probably got a lot of angry messages. Don't sweat it. I see that you're pretty new to World of Tanks. There are some streamers you can watch that can help you improve, if you want to. Go on YouTube and look for 4TankersandDog, SteelGutsinTN, and Dreadshells. Good luck, and have fun."

The lesson

Raging at a noob in chat isn't going to make him a better player. I'm not suggesting you can't get upset; I've certainly gotten frustrated and made chat comments I probably shouldn't have. But I think it's important for us all to remember that it's just a game, that new players have to learn too, and that the game is better if it's less toxic.

Help the new players learn, rather than calling them names, and the game will get better for all of us.

GLHF!
