The official post about the "Loot Boxes" ("Large Boxes" in World of Tanks) is now up on the site. The TLDR is that it's basically the same as the last few years. You can read the details on their site, or watch the video:
I won't waste time repeating what they say but let me summarize and answer the questions everybody asks about them, every year:
What's in the boxes?
Every box will have at least 250 Gold, Holiday Ops decorations, and either Premium Time or silver credits (either 100K or 500K).
Additionally, some boxes will also contain a tank or a 3D style.
What tanks?
Just like last year there are four different Tier 8, and five lower-tier, premium tanks that you might find in the boxes. Three are brand new tanks to the game, and the rest are tanks that have been around for a while.
All these tanks will come with garage slots and 100% crews.
✅The Bisonte C45 - Italian HT
The new Italian tier 8 heavy tank, with the reloading mechanism like the Progetto has. Skill4LTU did a review of it on YouTube the other day, and (spoiler alert) he didn't like very much.
✅GSOR 1008 - British TD
A new British, autoloading, turreted, TD. This seems like a VERY interesting vehicle that reminds me of an autoloading, tier 8, Hellcat. Dez did a review of this one; though keep in mind this review is 3 months old, so the tank may have changed a bit since then.
This tank is the probably the one I'm most interested in. Good pen, good mobility, good stealth...very interesting.
ISU-152K - Russian TD
This one has been in the game for a while, it's a big, casement, hard-hitting, Tier 8 TD.Bourrasque - French MT
We all know this one, little Russian LT/MT hybrid. 2 round autoloader. quite good if you like the mobile French autoloading MTs.
✅M4A1 FL 10 - French MT
Another brand new tank - this is a tier 6 French Sherman (like the American Easy 8) with an oscillating turret, and a 4-shot autoloader. Should be very interesting. I don't see any recent YouTube reviews yet , but here's the Tankopedia page.
T78 - USA TD
Pretty decent tier 6 American TD, basically a Chaffee with a Hellcat turret/gun.Matilda Black Prince - UK MT
British tier 5 medium. Don't have it yet, I heard the gun is good for tier 5.
Pz Kpfw T 15 - German LT
A tier 3 German LT. Don't know much about it, but not that interested in tier 3.
M22 Locust - USA LT
This one has been parked in the corner of my garage for a while. It's a tier 3 LT, VERY mobile, kinda fun for tier 3. Not much else worth mentioning since it's tier 3.
And?
There are also a bunch of 3D styles. I won't list them all, they're listed in the article. The 3D styles are nice, even if you don't care about the looks, because they give you the extra camo value. So if nothing else they're free camo for those tanks. Each 3D style can only be used on the specific tank it's designed for, of course.
Frequently asked questions
And the meat of the post...here are my answers to frequently asked questions about the boxes.
What do the boxes cost?
You have to buy them with actual money, and they haven't listed the 2020 price. Generally they're a couple of dollars (US) per box and they sell them in packs of 3, 11, 25, or 75. The bigger the pack you get the lower the price per box - they offer up to a 33% discount.
I'll probably buy about 300 boxes.
Are they worth it?
Depends. If money is tight for you, then it might not be worth spending much money on a game like this. If you're looking for a holiday gift for yourself (or somebody else) then maybe so.
Also depends on what you're looking to get out of the boxes. I tend to get most of my gold and premium time for the entire year out of these boxes and if that's what you want, then they're a good value.
If you're buying the boxes to get tanks...beware. You're not guaranteed to get ANY tanks. Every year the forums fill up with people griping. "I bought 11 boxes and didn't get a tank!!!!" or "I bought 25 boxes and only got a couple of Tier 3 tanks!" And, of course, you'll get people who say "I only bought 3 boxes and I got a Bourrasque AND a Bissonte!"
The tank drops are random and you could buy a lot of boxes and never get the tank you're hoping for.
No, really, what should I expect?
I keep track of my boxes so let me give you the stats on what I got the last couple years. Note: These are just averages, from past years, your mileage may vary, and THIS year could be a different algorithm so...
In 2019 I bought 300 boxes and got:
- 203,050 gold
- 17,600,000 silver
- 215 days of premium time
- Lot of Holiday ops decorations
- 4 703 II tanks
- 3 E75 TS tanks
- 10 AM 39 tanks
- 7 Sexton I tanks
- 5 PZ III K tanks
- 7 Bret Panther tanks
- 3 Firefly tanks
- 33 garage slots
Note: Even in 300 boxes I got ZERO Progettos or SU-130s
In 2018 I bought 235 boxes and got:
- 163,380 gold
- 14,100,000 silver
- 151 days of premium time
- Lots of holiday ops decorations
- 3 M4 Improved tanks
- 2 Leafblowers (French arty)
- 4 Turan tanks
- 5 KV-220 tanks
- 5 E 25 tanks
- 1 Skorp G tank
- 3 IS-3A tanks
- 18 garage slots
Note: Even in 235 boxes I got ZERO Defenders.
Duplicate tanks?
If you get a tank you already own, or a tank you've already won, they'll give you gold instead. That's one big reason why I got so much gold (203K last year, for example) and you also get the garage slot.
Will I get a tank!?
There are no guarantees. Out of 300 boxes last year I got 39 tanks (lots of duplicates). I averaged a tank about every 7.7 boxes.
I also averaged:
- 677 Gold per box (remember; a lot of that gold was from getting duplicate tanks tho)
- 58,667 Silver per box
- .72 days of premium time per box
Decorations?
If you're going to buy boxes I recommend buying them early. Why? Because of the decorations. You can use the decorations to increase the "festive atmosphere" of your garage. You might not care about the sparkly lights but...the higher your festive atmosphere, the more credit and XP boost you get in your tanks when you play.
I tend to buy my boxes right at the beginning, and though I may not open them all the first day, I usually open enough to get my garage up to the top festive atmosphere, so I can maximize my boosters.
