Tactics Talk: The road less travelled in World of Tanks

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

Sometimes the road less traveled is less traveled for a reason. On the 7 line in Fjords is such a road, tree lined on the west side, with very occasional hard cover. It's an interesting play for light tanks who may be able to tiptoe among the trees to spot TDs at C4 or cheeky LTs and MTs trying to make pressure at B7.

You can also spot crossers going south on the 4 line, though it's rare that your team gets any shots on them. Today I had my 13 57 on that map from the East spawn, and I signaled to my team that I was going to try and go to D7 and see if I could spot enemies at C4 and D4...figured at least our arties might get shots on the D4 crew (Spoiler alert: they didn't).

The Fjords map in World of Tanks

Our T28 HTC as we left the spawn our T28 HTC signaled that he was going to help me. I figured that meant he was oging to go to E7 and look for shots up to C4. Nope.

In fact, he pushed up the 7 line, even elbowing his way past me at one point. Right away I knew this was a foolish play...there's not much hard cover on the 7 line and once he got spotted (and an HTC is going to get spotted) he would be open to both of their arties, and all of the many TDs they'd have at C4.

Sure enough, he got lit, and within 10 seconds or so had been sent back to the garage.

There's rarely any reason to take a poorly camouflaged tank up the 7 line on Fjords in the early game. You're not arty safe and you can be shot by mediums at C7. as well as TDs at C4. To make matters worse, if they have the hill at E7 (and they did) you can get shot from behind too.

It's just a bad position. Don't do it.

Late game

Now in the late game there may be a reason to push up; especially if it's "Clean up on aisle 4" time and the last pocket of enemy tanks is battling in the pass at B7 - you can get shots on them, or you can swing down around A6 to find arty.

But that's after you have control of middle (and probably south) and are just looking to flank.

GLHF!
