A few random thoughts from the weekend's battles...

New Tank Blues

Getting a new tank can be both exciting and painful. You want to take your shiny new toy out but you probably don't have a fully trained crew yet or all the upgrades that tank needs to get. Some things you can buy (for example you can 75% train the crew for 20K each) and some upgrades you can buy if you have enough credits left over after buying the tank...but other things require XP. You *MIGHT* have enough free experience left after buying the tank to do some upgrades but if not...

That's the situation I found myself in this past week when I got my new VK 36.01 H. I was able to train the crew but I needed XP to do any real upgrades to the tank and didn't have enough free XP. Fastest way to get XP is to battle the tank (especially on x3 weekends) so that's what I did.

The first couple of battles were rough. The base gun is pretty poor (lot of damage, but it doesn't pen much) and the tank is painfully slow. In one battle I was barely outrunning a TOG out of our spawn.

Fortunately after a few battles I was able to get enough XP to upgrade the gun and that made the battles easier - soon I had enough XP to upgrade the engine. It's still slow but at least I can pen most of my enemies and get out of the spawn slightly more quickly.

Lesson: Be patient with the new tanks. Don't rush them into battle without at least a trained crew and as many upgrades as you can make. That may mean it has to sit in the garage for a day or three until you can save up enough free XP or credits.

The Law of Averages

On Saturday I had a rough patch of battles. Seems like every battle I fought 6 of my teammates were dead in the first 30 seconds and I was cursing my luck to have such lousy teams and be losing battle after battle. I eventually managed to get at least one win on all my key tanks (x3 bonuses) and put a few good battles on my primary tanks (Currently Chaffee, VK. 36.01 and T67), but it was rough.

On Sunday though the shoe was on the other foot. Wins came easily and my teams won something like 8 of my first 10 battles. I was playing ok, but my teammates were just much more capable than Saturday.

Lesson: Don't get too frustrated if it feels like you're getting creamed and your teammates are letting you down. The next day you could be on the other side of that equation and getting easy wins thanks to good teams. Just roll with it and learn what you can.

Video - Learning from the Best

I watch a LOT of WOT YouTube videos. Zeven, QuickyBaby, Ilya Red, Dauntless Tanker and more...I find it's really helpful to see how good players play different vehicles on different maps. I even watch the tank reviews, even though those aren't as obviously helpful. Most people, I think, only watch tank reviews for tanks they have or are interested in getting. I also watch tank reviews of tanks I'm likely to face. Not so much the Tier X Premiums but certainly any Tier VII, VIII or IX tanks. I find it helpful to have an idea of what their strengths and weaknesses are when I face them on the field.

Lesson: The more you know about the game, the better you'll be. That said...it is a game, so don't make it into a chore. Have fun!
