Wednesday in World of Tanks

I overslept a bit this morning so I only got in one battle, but one battle was all I needed to finish the grind to the Leo. Had a decent battle on Studzianki in the STRV 74 and that was all I needed to squeak past the XP I needed to unlock the Leo.

Let's Talk Studzi for a Moment

The Studzianki map (which I call "Studzi") is one of the newer maps in the game and a lot of folks aren't sure how to play it yet. I may be one of those folks, I tend to have a somewhat narrow approach to this map depending upon what tank I'm driving and what the enemy has.

In this case I was driving a STRV 74, and was bottom tier in a tier 7 battle. When I have gun depression in a light, medium, or turretted TD, my preference is go to to the A5 location if I think I can get there. I'm probably not taking a T28 Protoype there, of course, because it's too slow and probably won't make the crossing.

From A5 I can not only harass the enemy at A6, but I can very often get shots into the enemy HTs at C7.  Likewise from the other spawn A6 can have good shots on C5. Once you win that A5/6 hill you can really punish enemies who try to push the C line in the factory.

The first thing I look at in the team comp is how many arties the enemy has. If they have 3 arties, I tend NOT to go to the A5/A6 location because they'll just crap on you the whole game up there. If they have 1 or fewer arty then I think it's fine to go there. In this game they had 2 arty, which is a bit borderline.

My fallback, if they have three arties or if I can't get to the A line safely, is to go south, help push the J line, look for side shots on enemy heavies near the factory.

In a light tank I'll often race to the ditch in the middle. There are some good spotting bushes there, and once you're in the ditch only other tanks in the ditch can really shoot you. 2/3 of the time when I make that move I get to the ditch unspotted.

With a TD I'll sometimes play B1/B0, though I don't find I get good shots there some games. If my TD has gun depression I'm more likely to play the G3/G9 ridges. There's soft cover there and you can pull back down the hill. G3 is more successful for me in that I often get shots on the heavies around D7 (or crossing to that spot). The heavies from West spawn have too much cover so there's rarely many shots on them from G9.

I'm not a fan of the factory brawl, but if I have a brawling tank that can bully I'll go there.

About the Leo

I haven't had a chance to play the Leo yet, but I notice that in some ways it's similar to the Comet, which I also recently got. They both have fast-firing pew-pew guns that have pretty modest alpha. In fact, the alpha on the Leo is the same as the alpha of the STRV 74.

There IS a derp gun available for the Leo, and I'm sure I'll give that a try at some point, but I suspect it's like the Comet...not really that good. And the Leo doesn't really have the armor for brawling, so I think I'll prefer the 7.5cm gun that can hit (sort of gently) from range.

Naturally, my grind up the Swedish line to the Leo is in anticipation of the forthcoming Tier 8-10 Swedish mediums. So now I'll be grinding the Leo for a bit. Look for a tank review on that in the next week or so.
