Frontline is back in World of Tanks for 2020 and even though I stepped out of it in 2019 because it just got too annoying, it looks like I'll be all-in on Frontline for 2020.
GLHF!
Why?
First off I need the credits. I've unlocked the WZ-111 5A and the STRV 103B but don't have the credits to buy them yet.
Secondly, I want one of those Tier 9 reward tanks. Not sure which one yet, though I'm sort of leaning towards the Object 777. I have until May to figure it out, so we'll see.
Notice I said "one" of those Tier 9 reward tanks? I don't like Steel Hunter much, so there's really no chance of me doing enough to get both. If I grind Frontline hard enough, though, I should be able to get one of them.
Approach
I'm primarily grinding credits so I'll be playing premiums - in particular I'm playing mediums with ok armor, mobility and DPM. So a few of the tanks I'll be prioritizing are:
- T-44-100
- Type 59
- Progetto 46
- Cent 5/1
For light tanks:
- LT-432
- EBR FL 10
- Blackdog
Occasionally tank destroyers:
- SkorpG
- Ravioli (I know it's a MT, but I play it more like a TD)
And if I need a HT:
- Renegade
- E 75 TS
- Defender
As long as I make Captain or better every battle (and last time I tended to make Major most games; with a few Generals scattered here or there) I should be fine.
Tips
Here's a few tips for ranking up in Frontline:
- Be near the caps - either offense or defense. You rank up fastest when you cap or defend cap. If you're not capping or getting shots on people in the cap you're hurting yourself.
- Pay attention to how many reserve tanks you have available. If you don't have any reserve tanks ready...be careful and play a little safe. I'm not saying hide...but just don't take unnecessary risks until your next reserve tank comes available.
- Take a trip through your garage before you click battle and make sure you have your crews in the tanks you'll want and your combat reserves are properly configured.
- Speaking of combat reserves - if you're on defense and have airstrike or arty consider using them primarily to defend cap. It's a judgement call, but that's where you'll get the most value, so if you think that in the next 60 seconds you'll have a chance to drop them on cap to potentially kill somebody there...wait for the cap.
- There's strength in numbers. Especially on offense, but on defense too, if you get caught out alone, you're an easy target. Look for other players near you who seem to be running together...and get into that pack.
- Mobility matters - there are a few instances where a heavy or an armored TD come in handy, but honestly in Frontline - especially after the first set of caps - you're going to want something that can shift a little and get around the battlefield. Your armor doesn't hold up so well against mobile tanks, on an open map, and with so much arty. Plus in a slow tank you're more likely to get left behind, chasing damage, or caught out alone.
- Use those combat reserves - and not just arty. Engineering is almost always my first combat reserve. It speeds up your cap, and helps you if you're blocking cap. Those are the fastest ways to rank up. Don't overlook Inspire either! Especially if you're on attack and get into a wolfpack, if you activate your Inspire reserve you can get credit for the damage your pack does while inspired by you.
- Winning or losing makes little difference. Frontline is all about ranking up. If you're on offense, don't be in a hurry to kill the objectives. Cap all 6 of the zones, then farm damage a little before you worry about destroying the turrets.
- Frontline stats don't count. Not for win rate or marks of excellence. So just have fun and don't get too caught up in how well (or badly) you do in a particular tank.
UPDATE:
Two days in - I'm thisclose to finishing tier 9. 2nd day wasn't as fun as the first day. Apparently everybody remembered to start playing their EBRs and day 2 was a flashback to 2019 where EBRs buzzed around constantly sticking shots into you while you could barely traverse fast enough to get your gun on them.
Still...doing ok, earning credits, making progress. Need to just "shake it off" and remember that it's just a game and who cares. :-)
