Here's a quick take on the Waffentrager event that is going on now in World of Tanks.
I don't want to try and explain the whole event to you, so if you're not familar, here's the official page - with video: https://worldoftanks.com/en/news/general-news/the-last-waffentrager-regulations/
Gameplay
So far I've played 4 games as a "Harrier" and 3 games as "The Engineer".
Harriers
So far I've played a couple of games as the "Harrier" and I'll say that the modified T55s are good to play. Nice mobility.
The bots you have to deal with aren't very tough - especially the first few sets - and especially with the early ones you can do a lot of damage by ramming them. Also you need to get pretty close because after they die somebody from your team needs to collect the energy.
Tips
- It takes a few seconds to collect the energy so don't think you're just going to drive through and scoop it up. You have to sit there for a couple of seconds - and yes, there's a timer.
- Even from the very beginning you CAN deal damage to the Waffentrager, but you're dealing very very little damage. Kill a few of the bot teams - once your gun gets to 40-50% you can start to deal meaningful damage to the Waffentrager.
- Work together. That seems obvious but, if you try to 1 v 1 the Waffentrager you're going to fail. He can basically 2 shot you.
- Don't think you're going to get in close and circle him. The EMP weapon he has will take out your systems and leave you as a sitting duck.
Engineer
As the engineer you get to play the Waffentrager itself. I don't know yet what the optimal strategy is here. Defending your bots is helpful to slow their ability to take stuff, but also you want to get a good position that you can defend. Driving out in the open just makes you an easy target.
The gun is good and the reloader reloads surprisingly fast. You can basically two shot the T55s. The EMP is good, but range is limited. Same with the electric "stun" shot. You actually CAN bounce some shots - so don't assume every shot is a pen.
Mobility isn't great, isn't terrible.
You're going to get swarmed. My advice - focus fire and don't worry so much about the three that went around behind you. All the more reason to get a position where you can back up against some hard cover and keep enemies mostly in front of you.
Tips
Find a spot where you can get some hard cover. If you let them surround you and snipe you're going to be dead.- Changed my opinion on this...now that people are figuring it out the best tactic seems to be to YOLO. Charge into the fray and kill as many of the T55s as you can while they're still weak. Hang around where your minions spawn, the T55s need to come there to collect the energy.
- Focus fire until a target is dead. Constantly rotating around to shoot different guys wastes time and just damaging them isn't really that helpful - you want kills.
- Pick the easiest targets first. The smart players will try to get hull down and your gun is good, but you don't want to be taking pixel shots if a different target is out in the open.
- Use the EMP when any of them get close. Not sure yet what the range is, but it's pretty short.
Footlockers
What most people want is the footlockers, and as usual most people want the vehicles. I bought 30 of the "special" footlockers as a test - only got 1 vehicle out of the entire set, but it was the T77, which is what I was most interested in.
I got a bunch of training books, some credits, bunch of boosters.
Tips
The reload mechanic is interesting - you pay an increasing amount of gold (for the special footlockers, or silver for the basic ones) to "reroll" the box. Note, you CAN get the same thing twice. There were a couple of times I spent the gold to reload...and just got the same thing again.
My strategy was that I didn't care about Demounting Kits so if I got one of those I'd reload - the first reload is sort of free, since they give you 100 gold (the cost of a reload) with every box. I rarely reloaded twice - didn't want to LOSE too much gold.
This mostly worked out - I only reloaded maybe 1 out of every 3 or 4 kits; only did a second reload once.
T77
Looking at the stats it doesn't seem especially great - but keep in mind I haven't take it out yet. I'll have a review soon. It's an autoloading American heavy with poor armor, ok mobility, fairly low DPM. (again, I haven't taken it out yet so I'm just going by the stats I see).
Verdict
The gameplay itself is kinda fun. The footlockers are sort of meh; not as good as the XMas boxes. I like that unlike some events you actually CAN earn credits and other rewards as you go; rather than having to grind for days hoping to reach some tier where the first rewards arrive. Overall I like it.
