AutoLoader: Secret rewards and bad tactics

A few random thoughts about World of Tanks as 2021 comes to a close.

Done sending holiday parcels? Not so fast...

If you're one of the many players who completed all the "Send 10 parcels a day" missions, or if you don't earn enough stamps to send 10 a day, you may have stopped sending them thinking there were no rewards for you. But think again...

As it turns out - and I've found no official documentation for this yet - when you keep sending the holiday parcels you will randomly get little rewards drops. Mostly I've noticed getting additional small boxes, or perhaps crew books. Some people have received a special commander though.

No apparent rhyme or reason to when you get them. Sometimes I give out a dozen boxes and don't get anything. Yesterday I got two rewards drops in a row when giving out boxes.

If nothing else, it's free for you and a nice little gift for your in-game friends. So keep sending them out!

Tip: If you don't have enough in-game friends, consider sending friend requests to people you see in battles who do something that impresses you.

Let's talk tactics...

Was in my SkorpG on El Halluf standard, South spawn the other day. I was bottom tier so I started off playing around G3 so I could get some early shots on their crossers at B3/B4. Also managed to sneak in a few shots on spotted TDs in the D7 position.

The El Halluf map in World of Tanks

Late in the game, we're losing. The NW corner is lost, our guys in the south are dying. Our T30 is still alive and holding the E1 corner, alone. He's got multiple enemy tanks at C1 and D2 and is calling for help. I tap "Affirmative" and I push back to the J1 spot, where I can shoot anybody that pushes him.

Let's be honest - at this point we're 3 vs 7 or 8 and we're going to lose. And if the enemy decides to rush him, I'm going to get 1, maybe 2, shots of damage in before he dies, and maybe 2 more before I die, if I'm lucky.

The enemies at C2 poke the C1 corner once and I punish them...but then they wisely pull back.

So here's where the bad tactics come in. My T30 keeps pushing around the D1 corner to shoot the enemy tanks at D2. Every time he does it he gets a shot of damage, but he eats 1 or 2 shots from the enemies. The bigger problem is that when he pokes that corner he's facing enemies I have no shots on.

And, of course, every time it happens he pulls back to reload and mashes the "HELP!" button. But I can't help him when he does that (and I tell him so in chat). What he needs to do is sit back in E2 and force the enemies to come around the corner into him. If they push into him then he'll have shots and I'll have shots. 1200 alpha combined. We're still going to lose, but we might take a couple of them with us.

But no...he keeps pushing that corner, eating damage, and eventually gets killed. Then the inevitable "SKORP NOOB!" "UNINSTALL!" I'm busy getting 2-3 last shots of damage before I die, it's a 7-15 loss.

What he doesn't understand is that all I could do to help him in that situation (in a SkorpG) is to take up a position where I could punish anybody who pushed into him. He never made them push into him, though, because he was too busy poking that corner and eating shots.

By poking that D1 corner he did two things:
  1. He took a lot of damage, and ultimately got himself killed.
  2. He kept the enemies around the corner where I had no shots. They might have been afraid to push into him, but they might have simply realized that they didn't need to push into him because he kept pushing into them and giving them shots.
Could I have driven up and joined him at E1? Sure...but why would I take a SkorpG, with no armor and slow turret traverse, into a phone booth with Tier IX/X heavy tanks? Much better for me to set up where I have shots, am less likely to get spotted, and where the enemy tanks might give me side shots or side turret shots.

If I drive to E1 with him, I'm dead moments after he is and I'll be lucky to get more than 1 shot of damage in.

Could I have flanked around somehow to get the guys at D2? Maybe, but to do that I'd probably have had to drive to F3...and the bad guys in the south would have had shots on me.

If he sits in E2, and forces the enemy to come around the corner to get him, however, we both have shots and now it's 2 guns against the enemy, instead of just his.

The lesson...

The lesson here is that when you're asking a teammate (especially a sniper TD or sniper MT) for help you need to help them help you. Be aware of what they do and don't have shots on. Pull the enemy tanks into your teammate's line of fire.

But whatever you choose to do don't get mad at your teammate for not doing something stupid to cover your bad tactics.

GLHF!
