XO Summary
- The best part of the D-Day missions are the bonuses to XP and crew training, which will stick around for a few days.
- In 3 arty battles there's MORE camping as people hide from arty, and try to be unspotted.
- The King Tiger is pretty decent
The D-Day Bonuses
The most important part of the D-Day missions is remembering the troops who gave their lives in a critical mission to bring WWII closer to an end.
In the game, however, the most important part of the mission is probably not the tier 5 French TD you'll get after completing 10 stages. The most important part is the XP and crew training bonuses you're getting on EVERY BATTLE during the event.
Each day of the event those bonus levels go up and they apply to every battle you play, every day, in every tank, during the event. That's potentially huge, especially if you're grinding a crew. And the bonuses will continue for THREE days after the event concludes; so until about June 10th.
Even if you don't want the M10 RBFM Tank Destroyer, you should be knocking off these daily missions (and they're really easy; you're probably getting most of them done accidentally) just to reap those bonuses.

Arty Promotes Camping
In a recent battle where each team had 3 arty I realized that while arty may be handy for digging out hull down tanks, or punishing people who play too far back (assuming they get spotted), it also promotes camping. Particularly if you're in a slow tank, or when there are 3 arty per side, the punishment for being spotted out in the open can be massive stun, track, module damage, and even significant loss of health. And because of the splash mechanic they can miss you and still take hundreds of hit points.
So what happens? If you get spotted, you immediately dive into cover behind a building or a rock, anywhere you think you might be arty-safe. Now that's not that unusual. Unless you're making an aggressive move where you expected to get spotted you probably pull into cover any time you're lit. But with lots of arty in the game, I find that people pull into cover...and stay there.
They stay there until they're SURE they're no longer lit. And often even beyond that. Just hunkered down, trying not to get clicked from the other side of the map.
In my experience when there are 3 arty in the game (sometimes even with 2) that players are MORE reluctant to move around, or push across open spaces. The penalty for getting spotted out there is just too high when you can get tracked, stunned, and killed from A0.
The King Tiger (Captured)
I'll admit it...seems weird to me to have a Tiger fighting under the American flag but...hey, whatever. Apparently it was a real historical thing.
Despite the odd sense of driving a Tiger with an American crew, the tank itself is not bad. It's helped a lot by the fact that it's a tier 7 which makes more difference than you might expect. I'll probably do a full tank review of it eventually, but here are a few highlights:
- DPM is ok. It's not the best in class and not the worst. The pen (203) on the standard ammo is quite good and so is rate of fire (8.55/rpm), which helps to make up for a bit of a meh alpha (240). Aim time (2.29) is pretty average for its class, but accuracy is actually pretty good at .33. I found the gun quite comfortable when I was using it and I didn't have to fire any prem rounds.
- Survivability is quite good. The armor is extremely strong for tier 7. It doesn't have the god-like turret of it's brother the T29, but it has better hull armor. 150 on the front of the hull, 185 on the front of the turret puts it second only to the Black Prince in that department. 1300 HP is a bit on the low end for its class, but not bad.
- Mobility lets this tank down a bit - the 9.94 power-to-weight makes it a bit sluggish. The 38kmh forward is actually pretty good, but it'll take you a while to get there. This thing is VERY heavy at 70 tons. I think only the O-Ni is heavier at this tier.
- Concealment is...well, it's a heavy tank. Moving on....
- One thing it does inherit is the American view range. With my current crew - who are decent but not 5 skill, running vents and optics, I get 446m of view range. Note that you can't mount vertical stabilizers on this tank so really the gun laying drive, or MAYBE the spall liner, are the only other equipment even worth considering. But it's got decent aim time already, and you're probably not going to get rammed very often given the weight and armor profile.
So I like the King Tiger - especially since I got it for free just by claiming my Twitch Prime loot. It's not OP, but it's a capable heavy tank at tier 7.
