Hungry Like the Wolf in Frontline

Season 5 has been a bit of an eye-opener when it comes to the meta of Frontline in World of Tanks.

I've started keeping some stats on my Frontline games (out of boredom, partly) and even though Season 4 was dominated by the attackers...Season 5 is far more balanced. In fact, today, I've had 9 games of Frontline and the defense has won 6 of them. (67%)

One big theme has emerged for me. In the games where the attackers win, it's usually because one or more effective wolfpacks develop. Groups of tanks, usually 4 or more, that run together, killing and capping. They're aggressive and mobile.

In the games where the attackers lose, it's because too many of the attacking team are content to sit back and snipe, and no good wolfpacks really press the pace. In one of my attack losses we outnumbered the defenders 2:1 in D zone, but nobody would push up with me...and we lost, never having capped D (or F). The most forward defensive player in the western flank of the zone was a Progetto who was on about 80 remaining hit points...but three of our team sat back, terrified of him.

Worse still in that game nobody on our team got past Captain. You just don't rank up much by sitting three hills away and trying to snipe. You need to cap, deal damage, spot, track people...

So, my advice to you as an attacker. Find a wolfpack. Invite other players, especially those in fast mediums, to join your pack. Push, kill, and cap. Hopefully your pack can inspire others on your team to follow.

But if you're alone, timid, sniping from the back...chances are good your team is going to lose AND you're not really going to rank up.

Combat Reserves in Frontline

I've started to settle on a strategy for my combat reserves in Frontline. I can carry two in my mediums so for most of them I choose Engineering (to help cap; and, rarely, block cap) and Inspire. When you're in your wolfpack, firing up that Inspire reserve lets you get credit for all the damage your pack (at least the ones close enough to you) do. I've gotten Major and General pretty easily just by liberal use of the Inspire reserve in my wolfpack.

Naturally those are the first two combat reserves I train to 5. Once they're at 5, I've started training Air Recon. I considered Arty, and that will be the 4th reserve I train, but I think there's more to be gained from the assistance, again especially when working with others.

General of the Army

Did you know that the player in Frontline who finishes with the most XP gets designated "General of the Army"? (The player has to have made General rank, of course). Turns out I've managed it 5 times, and didn't even realize it.

Other than the badge I don't think there's any other advantage.
