Snap Shot: Frontline Season 5 in World of Tanks

Season 5 of Frontline has begun and so far....it's just as bad, if not worse, for the defenders. To be fair I've only played one battle of Frontline so far today, but the defense is basically still just cannon fodder. Attack rolls through easily.

It's a combination of it being a bit too easy to attack, and the teams figuring it out. You win on attack by wolfpacking. Defense tries the same tactic, but unfortunately it's a guessing game for them. You can all wolfpack to Cap A, for example, but then the attackers just shift to B and by the time you realize they've shifted it's too late. Defense usually just can't react fast enough to respond to where the Attackers have gone.

For a while we had 20 people defending C. In the meantime the attacking wolfpacks rolled through A and B like it was just water. At one point I spawned into "D" to try and help defend, there were only 3 defenders there. Enemy quick capped it, then as I tried to fall back to defend the objectives I was getting shot in the back by 3 or 4 enemies at the same time. That meant I got to test out the new respawn mechanic several times. It's better, by the way.

At one point I tried to join a wolfpack on defense in my LT-432, and literally could not find a single teammate within 150m to partner up with. Everybody was crammed into C while the entire rest of the map got overrun. And eventually C lost too just by sheer weight of numbers.

The other new mechanic is the change to combat reserves. It's nice that mediums get two now: I've got engineering and (something else) on all my mediums - usually either arty or air recon (Inspire for the autoloaders). There did seem to be slightly fewer arty strikes this morning (maybe because only the HTs have 3 reserves now).

And still hordes of EBRs racing around the map.

So...if you get defense, as always, defend the caps as best you can, but understand that it's just a matter of time before a dozen attacking tanks show up in a wolfpack and overrun you. Rank up as best you can, but on defense I think it's become a game of just trying to farm and rank, and hope the attacking team has enough idiots, or you can get lucky.

On the plus side the attacking team had it figured out nicely. They worked together, and took strategic positions. Their only fault was that they only captured 5 of the 6 zones before easily killing the objectives.

In my battle this morning, one defender got Major, nobody got General, most didn't get past Lieutenant. Too hard to rank up when you're always getting overrun, killed, and sent to the respawn box.

  1. Forgot to mention: If you have combat reserves that you brought forward from Season 4, you'll probably need to re-attach them to your tanks before you start. If you just roll into battle you may find that you have no combat reserves if you don't check that first.
