Tech Tree Showcase: The STB-1 Grind

The STB-1 was On Track/Top of the Tree from Jan 5, 2021-Feb 5, 2021

Starting from Tier 5 (because I don't care too much about 4 and below)...

Chi-Nu

The Chi-Nu starts us off. It's a fast-firing, not very accurate, medium. Mobility is sort of meh, armor isn't awful for Tier 5 but isn't much. It has great gun depression (-15 degrees) and even though it doesn't seem like my kind of vehicle I actually did ok in it for the few battles I played in it before moving on.

I didn't find it that much fun, so I sold it initially (though buying it back thru the On Track becase I'm a collector).

The biggest thing for this tank is that with the best gun you get really good pen for tier 5, but the gun handling is so bad that you might not get so many chances to pen things. Officially the dispersion is .37 but it plays more like .57.

DPM isn't bad, because of the rate of fire, but good luck hitting enough shots to actually realize that DPM.

It's hard to know whether it's better to play it back as a sniper due to the meh armor, or play it forward a bit because of the good pen and rate of fire. If you play it back, the accuracy will frustrate you. If you play forward...you have to be very careful not to take derp shots in the face.

Chi-To

The Chi-To plays very much the same way. The gun isn't very exciting other than good pen and rate of fire - but the accuracy isn't good. Just like the Chi-Nu the accuracy of the gun will frustrate you pretty often. Mobility is kinda meh and the armor isn't really there.

It's a bit tall, and has a tall cupola on top. So not as easy to play hull down as you might expect and with 75mm of armor a lot of people will just shoot you in the face.

It's not a terrible tank, I guess, but it's just not very exciting to play. With no armor it's hard to play aggressively and with bad gun handling it's hard to snipe.

Chi-Ri, rhymes with "OP". Coincidence?

Yes. The Chi-Ri is actually playable when you get the top gun with the autoloader. It's a 3-shot, the accuracy is workable (if not great) and it fires and loads pretty quickly.

Some autoloaders are assassins that can zoom in on a isolated, wounded, enemy, clip them out, and scamper away. The Chi-Ri isn't that. It's even slower than the Chi-To, so you have to play it carefully, but when you get into a spot where you're 1 on 1 with somebody who has low alpha, you can put three shots into them for every 1 shot they put into you.

It's also interesting as a support medium if you can time your pokes well.

Is it good? Well...it's playable.

STA-1

After yawning your way thru the lower tiers, the STA-1 at Tier 8 makes it kinda worth it. It's very much more your typical Tier 8 medium. 240 alpha, very good DPM, 10 degrees of gun depression.

The mobility isn't great, top speed is 45, but it doesn't FEEL too sluggish. The armor is non-existant though, so don't go in front. I think the LT-432 has better armor.

But view range is good, standard pen is ok, and it fires quickly. Accuracy still isn't brilliant, so you may want to equip improved aiming and make sure you train snap shot.

Type 61

The Type 61 is not universally loved, but I actually liked it once I got comfortable. It plays pretty much just like the STA-1, but with 360 alpha. Even with a mediocre crew and no food, I still get 3200 DPM.

Just like the STA-1, though, there's no armor and the mobility isn't brilliant.

STB-1

At the top of the tree is the STB-1 which some people think is the best Tier 10 MT in the game. Not sure I'll go that far, but it is very good.

It has the same alpha & pen as the top gun on the Type 61 (no surprise) but gets up to 3700 DPM and the accuracy is a bit better.

The mobility is quite a bit better with 25hp/ton and a top speed of 50.

Perhaps the biggest difference is the survivability though, you suddenly have 222 of frontal turret armor.
