Tank Review: M54 Renegade

For today's tank review I thought I'd do the Tier 8 American Premium HT, the Renegade.

If you don't want to bother with the details I'll just say...I really like it. I only have about three dozen games in mine so far, but I have about a 65% win rate and it just feels very comfortable. It struggles with Tier 10s, yes, but almost all Tier 8s do. But I find it can even be competitive with Tier IXs in the right circumstances.

Is it good for earning credits? It's ok. The shells aren't cheap, but not crazy expensive either, and there's not much point of tapping 2 in this tank very often so that helps. The shell cost for AP is slightly less than the Lowe.

The M54 Renegade

This is a HT but it's got really good mobility for an HT. Top speed is a nearly best in tier 45 km/h. Only a handful of tanks like the 50/100, WZ-111, Emil I are faster.

Likewise power/weight - only a few heavy tanks (including, curiously, the Chrysler K) have better power/weight. Tank and turret traverse are near best in class.

As a result the mobility is pretty good. The one downside is the terrain resistance isn't great, so Off-Road Driving on the driver is important.

Frontal armor is good, and front turret armor is very good. 250mm on the front of the turret which is nearly as good as a Caern AX, same as a Defender, and better than a VK 100.01P. That's great on a tank with -10 degrees of gun depression. It does have a big cupola and the forehead is a weakspot, but I find that people don't pen those as often as I expect.

Frontal hull armor is competitive at 152mm, better than Lowe, the same as a T26E5. The lower plate isn't great either, but with this turret and gun depression you're going to be trying to play hull down as much as possible anyhow.

The side and rear armor are the weaknesses. You can't reliably side-scrape in it and most people can pen your back with HE.

The gun is quite good as well. DPM, even with a poor crew, is good (~2520/min), in fact the 360 alpha, and 226 standard pen is a very good combination and nothing with higher alpha at the tier has as fast a reload. With vents and rammer (no food or BIA) your reload approaches 8-1/2 seconds.

Accuracy is ok at .35. It's not a great sniper, but I find I with v-stabs the accuracy is perfectly workable.

One "downside" is that the gold pen is only 255...so I don't bother to carry any gold in it. Standard pen is close enough and shell velocity for both AP and HE is a decent 1080/m/s.

Equipment

I run mine with vents, v-stabs, and rammer.

Crew skills

So the good news is that it's a premium so you're just using whatever skills you've put on the tech tree crew you're running in it, right?

The bad news is...it only had four crew members (and no radio operator) so while it's a good crew trainer for the T57 Heavy, it's not a good crew trainer for the main U.S.A heavy line from the T1 Heavy thru the T29 up to the T110E5.

What does Skill4LTU think of it?
