AutoLoader: Ranked is rank, counter-arty, and T49

A few random thoughts on World of Tanks...

I kinda hate Ranked Battles

Ranked Battles are in season at the moment. I've never played Ranked before and I'm starting to be glad of that.

Normally I don't get much chance to play Ranked. My usual gaming time is early in the morning, before work, when my wife and son are still sleeping. And Ranked is turned off during those hours. But this week my wife and son are on a road trip to visit some family. I couldn't go due to work...so my evenings are free.

"Cool," I thought, "I can grind Ranked for 2-4 hours a night."  Yeah, no.

Honestly I can't get thru more than an hour without wanting to smash my keyboard. My teams are terrible - I think I'm winning MAYBE 1 out of 4 so far, and RNG has picked the worst times to say no.

When you lose you have to finish top 3 on your team to gain a chevron and the reality is that I'm just not good enough at tier X (especially since I'm reluctant to press 2) to do that consistently. So my battles generally go one of two ways:
  1. My team is crap. I do ok damage and finish in the top 10...but not in the top 3.  That seems to be about 70% of the time.
  2. My team is good. We're winning. But I'm chasing damage and RNG always seems to bone me at the wrong moments. Like tonight when I was getting rushed by the enemy tanks, needed basically 1 more shot of damage to get into the top 10, and bounced a point-blank shot off the lower plate of an E4. We won, but I finished 11th. Thanks Obama!
A better player than me would probably overcome these issues. But as I've said before I think I'm above-average, but not elite. And I don't have a lot of experience at Tier X.

New strategy

I've mostly been playing MTs: Leopard 1, STB-1, M48 Patton, 121... But clearly I'm too aggressive for this mode. What I need to do is hang back more at the start, until I see what my team is doing. If they're melting (as usual) then I need to be in a position to farm as much damage as I can before getting overrun. Maybe I can sneak into the top 3 more often.

If we're actually winning, then I can push up and try to get as much as I can. But going in front is just getting me killed, and while I'm usually top 10, I'm not doing enough to be top 3 often enough.

M44 is my jam?

I don't play arty much - usually just to knock off a mission or two. But I think I have about a 56% WR in the M44, and my recent WR is probably closer to 75%. I can't explain why that is - could just be luck. But it could also be that I'm pretty aggressive about blind firing common positions and doing counter-arty. I probably kill at least one enemy arty in 2/3 of my battles - in a Karelia game yesterday I killed BOTH enemy arties.

That may be a small thing but I want to believe that harassing and killing enemy arty, and at least splashing tanks hiding in the usual bushes is giving my teams enough of an edge that it's translating to a very strong win rate for me.

T49 Grind

Putting some XP into the T49 ahead of the Sheridan On Track that starts on the 5th of April. I'm running the Derp gun on it at the moment, though I'll probably switch back to the standard gun shortly.

For now my tactic is to spot early and not shoot unless I have a very up-close opportunity. Later in the battle I'll look for opportunities to swoop in against distracted, and hopefully wounded, opponents and derp them in the side or rear.

Save the hit points for the late game. Spot, move, spot, then try to get some damage and kills in the 2nd half of the game.

We'll see how it goes.

GLHF!
