Type 5 Heavy is On Track ("Top of the Tree" for our EU friends) now and thanks to Blueprints and slow grinding over time I already had the Type 4 Heavy unlocked when this started. I've now played about 25 battles on the Type 4 Heavy and I have a few thoughts:
Yep, it's slow
Every bit as slow as expected. You just really can't flex around the yard, and that means it's an extremely hard tank to carry with. You have to pick a flank early and go there. If the other flank loses...well, not much you can do about that. God forbid you have to go uphill.
Armor is pretty good
I'm not great at blocking damage, but I routinely block 4K+ in the Type 4 Heavy. Had one battle where I blocked 8K.
There is no Safe Stowage
Despite having Safe Stowage trained to 100% on one my loaders the Type 4 Heavy gets ammo racked pretty much every battle - often more than once per battle. I just switched Improved Hardening to Modified Configuration, so we'll see if that helps...
Ammo is cheap but credits aren't plentiful
When I saw how cheap the ammo was I thought this tank might not be bad on credits. Well...compared to some Tier 9s it isn't...but I still had a battle where we WON, I didn't fire a single round of gold (didn't even carry any) and I still lost credits.
Stock gun is meh, second gun is nice....
...if you're shooting AP. The HE nerf probably hit these tanks hard. In the stock gun you'll have to resort to HE fairly often - especially against Tier X because your AP only has 230 pen and you don't have the speed to flank anything. So unless you get a weakly armored vehicle or somebody turns and shows you their weak spot, you'll struggle to pen Tier 9/10 stuff with AP.
The HE hits and does damage...but you'll often do "43 damage".
The second gun has 257 pen on the AP, which (so far) has been a fair bit better, at least against Tier 9.
More to come...
GLHF!
