AutoLoader: Crawling to the fight, Gift boxes, and more in World of Tanks

A few random thoughts about World of Tanks as we approach Christmas...

The AT8 and other Brit TDs

Grinding field modifications on the AT8 and other mid-tier TDs on the Badger line. They've got nice guns, and good frontal armor (especially the AT8 with 203mm at Tier 6). The sub 4 second reload, 171 standard pen, and 150 alpha (with sub .3 accuracy) means that even with a bad crew you can get north of 2600 DPM (assuming you can ever get to the fight).

They've got a huge cupola on top and that's a weak spot, but if you can hide that it's tough for Tier 7 and below to pen you frontally. Even some Tier 8 MTs (like the Type 59) will have problems with it unless they press 2.

The AT 7 in World of Tanks

They also have really bad gun depression (5 degrees) and poor gun traverse (10 degrees or less, left and right).

Probably the biggest problem with them, though, is the mobility. They're so slow (AT8 has a top speed of 20) that it's not uncommon for 3-4 of my team to already be dead before I can even get to the fight). And you can't really flex around the yard.

So it's hard to carry in them, though I darn near did in a Tier 8 battle on Prok yesterday. The fight really has to come to you.

On the AT 7 the big cupola is in the middle of the roof, but the gun is WAY offset to the right. That can be good, if you can put yourself against hard cover with JUST the gun sticking out and side scrape very slightly, you can be really tough to dig out.

Of course it's pretty situational, if your only hard cover is on the OTHER side of the tank you have a real problem. You can only really poke left-handed corners.

Unless, of course, the enemy has arty in which case it's gg either way.  Had a Steppes Encounter battle where the other team had 3 jeffs. Didn't matter how I positioned our used my armor. I just got clicked from the red line for 3 minutes until I was dead.

Still, in the right situations, the fast firing gun can be pretty good.

If you're going to play this line, and you don't care too much about rushing to the Badger, I'd encourage you to linger on the AT 8. The AT 7 is a pretty small upgrade, in my opinion, but the AT 7 can see Tier 9s. The AT 8 is much better tier for tier, and assuming you can get to the fight, you can really be impactful.

Holiday gift boxes

World of Tanks is doing something new this Holiday Ops - we're encouraged to gift small boxes to our in-game friends. I know why Wargaming is doing it - people play more often if they have friends in game. It's also why Wargaming encourages platoons and clans. It's more fun and "stickier" if you have those buddies to play with.

For us, it adds a nice sense of camaraderie, and it's kinda nice to see that you've just received a small box from somebody.

Good idea, Wargaming, we should do that more often.

Roles...

Wondering what happens on Live Oaks when your only scout spends the entire battle fapping about on the K line while the rest of the team gets outspotted and gunned down? This does.

Yes, I ended up with a zero damage game (actually, turns out I hit a blind shot so 384 damage) in my Kpz 105 because I had nearly no red tanks to shoot, and as soon as I got spotted 3 tanks I couldn't see sent me back to the garage in seconds.

Frustrating.

Leopard 1 On Track

The Leopard 1 (German MT) went On Track (Top of the Tree for our EU friends) this morning. It's a very good, mobile, medium with a great gun for sniping. The line is really good too, in my opinion.

All the way from the VK 30.02D (which I once called the best Tier 7 MT in the game) they're very playable, nice mobility, generally good guns. The 30.02D has a problem with terrible standard pen, but otherwise.

I think you'll enjoy this line if you give it a go.

GLHF!
