Had a World of Tanks battle this morning on Oyster Bay in my Hellcat and I wanted to talk about it because I did something stupid and we can all learn from it.
In a TD or MT I've sometimes had success going to the SE. This serves two related purposes:
- You can get flanking shots on the enemy HTs and help your HTs win that flank.
- You can counter enemy MTs/TDs who are trying to do the same thing.
We were playing from the SW spawn and with 5 HTs on each team I decided to make the SE flank play. For context, I was doing a mission where I needed to get one more kill. That helped my bad decision. :-)
Along with another Hellcat I made my way down to around J8. We didn't see any enemies in the SE and I got a couple of shots into a Tiger 131. So far, so good. But the battle started to go very bad overall. Within about 3 minutes we were already down 0-5 and I'd taken a shot from an enemy Hellcat who was sitting somewhere around their sniper shelf at E9.
My mistake
Here's where I got greedy. Fully aware that I needed to get a kill to finish the mission I pushed another rock further forward trying to find a shot on the enemy heavies. This put me in a crossfire with the Hellcat and the Tiger 131. Team was down 0-7 at this point and the southern flank was starting to bend.
Sure enough, the Hellcat hit me again and the Tiger killed me.
What should I have done?
The smarter play, given the team was crumbling fast would have been to fall back to at least J5, if not all the way back to the cap. I'd have had a chance to get another couple shots of damage, would have been safe from the Hellcat, and might have found a wounded enemy to get my kill on.
We weren't going to win that battle, and it ended up as a 2-15 loss, but I could have played smarter, lived a little longer, and gotten another shot or three of damage.
GLHF!
